JUSTice Highlights - April 26, 2024
Only in God do I find rest; my salvation comes from God.
Only God is my rock and my salvation—my stronghold!—I won’t be shaken anymore.
(Psalm 62: 1-2)
Yesterday was an exciting day for justice-seeking United Methodists. Large portions of the regionalization plan passed via consent calendar, the constitutional amendments were passed with a wide margin, and many items the LYNC team is supporting are moving quickly through legislative committees and sub-committees.
Outside the conference business, we saw many people wearing black yesterday to honor “Thursdays in Black” in recognition of violence against women worldwide. Read more in this UMNS story about Bishop LaTrelle Easterling’s powerful sermon (everyone should watch this sermon).
And a crowd was gathered for the UMKR rally last night with powerful speakers. We hope to share more about that rally with you at a later date.
We’ve been waiting a long time for this General Conference - maybe since the 2016 General Conference, maybe since the 2019 special session, and maybe for 50 years. But here we are today and there is a sense of urgency to make our point, share our message, change the church, and change the world.
But God also calls us to rest, listen, and care for ourselves. And to pet dogs! So come visit with the therapy dogs that are visiting the LYNC Hospitality suite in the Hilton Garden Inn today, Monday, and Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. Read more on the LYNC Website.
While you are there - You can shop at the World Wide Craft Market to support ministries around the globe. Read more.
And if you are in Charlotte, don’t forget about the LYNC Multicultural Celebration BBQ on Sunday, April 28, at First United Methodist Church. Read more and RSVP on the events page.
LYNC will be hosting a series of lunchtime speakers
These will be from noon-1:30 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn, Dogwood Room C. Bring lunch with you on Monday and Wednesday. A light lunch will be provided on Tuesday. Come and hear what they have to share on these justice topics:
Monday, April 29: Deaconess Joy Prim will share about her work with Filipino women in the Philippines and Hong Kong. Her work covers broad human rights areas and supports United Methodist policies and resolutions.
Tuesday, April 30: Rev. Won-Seok Yuh and Amy Wake will share about the petition for Acts of Repentance and the UMC’s need to repent for its responsibility for the armed overthrow of the independent nation of Hawaii in 1893 and the illegal annexation in 1898.
Wednesday, May 1: Rev. T.C. Morrow will share about witnessing in public spaces, particularly government places of power, and her work with the National Religious Campaign Against Torture, including efforts to end long-term solitary confinement in prisons, jails, and detention centers.
