JUSTice Highlights - May 2, 2024
Because of our God’s deep compassion, the dawn from heaven will break upon us,
to give light to those who are sitting in darkness and in the shadow of death,
to guide us on the path of peace.
(Luke 1:78-79)
Today dawns as a new and different United Methodist Church.
LYNC and its coalition of fifteen partners came to the General Conference with a focus on what has become known as the Three R’s: Regionalization, Revised Social Principles, and Removing harmful language for LGBTQIA people in the church.
As of today:
Regionalization petitions have passed. However, implementation requires an aggregate vote of all annual conference members around the globe to approve constitutional amendments.
The Revised Social Principles have one section left to vote on. The key section contains the “incompatible with Christian teaching” language.
Most of the “harmful language” has been removed, with some petitions still to be reviewed, including the ban on same-sex weddings in UMC church buildings.
Here are some headlines for you to catch up:
Removal of LGBTQ ban comes too late for some. This United Methodist News Story has a good recap.
Students, delegates join in protest for students protesting Palestine. Read about it in the Western Jurisdiction News article by Kristen Caldwell.
United Methodist Church delegates vote to end anti-LGBTQ policies after decades. Read this article in the Charlotte Observer.

“I am a Proud, Out, Gay, Woman, Child of God”
For The Rev Dianne Tobey Covault, removal of the restriction on gay and lesbian clergy in The United Methodist Church, “feels like that rock has not only been lifted, but thrown away.” In an interview with Joelle Hennerman, She shares how this will allow for a new way of doing ministry for her.
And a word about money -
As the General Conference comes to a close, the lYNC teams that manage our budget say we are within $2,000 of fully meeting our budget and assuring we can pay our bills for the work preparing for and being in Charlotte. Can you help us get over the hump?
Ten people donating $200 will close the gap and help set LYNC in the right direction for the continuing work of bringing justice to the church and the world. Donate online.
And don’t forget!
You can shop at the World Wide Craft Market (through Friday at noon) to support ministries around the globe. Read more.
Some Images of the Day
As the ban on queer clergy ordination fell, those who have fought so long for a change shared tears and joy.
LYNC will be hosting a series of lunchtime speakers
Time Change!
These will be from 12:30-1:30 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn, Dogwood Room C. Bring lunch with you. Come and hear what they have to share on these justice topics:
Thursday, May 2: Pieter Friedrich is a US-based independent journalist and author of four books. He will talk with us about the rise of persecution of Christians in India, the source and ideology driving it, the direness of the situation, and how it simultaneously impacts other religious minorities.
Friday, May 3: Rev. Johanthan Campbell will discuss the healing work of Jesus in its historical context and how to proclaim the justice and reconciliation work that is at the heart of the healing narratives. He will also explain the insights of Disability Theology for welcoming and empowering people with disabilities in our congregations.
